More Dew Tour Videos!
Posted by Mark - 27 Jul, 2009Here are a couple of my favorite clips from the Dew Tour stop this weekend in Boston. Might be my last Dew Tour for a while, but I will say this: probably because I am vocal, and maybe because I am on the board of USAS, I caught the ear of a couple of the key people at Alli, and they actually seemed interested in listening to some constructive criticism on their event. Most of the stuff they desperately need centers around taking care of the people in the industry -- make it NOT MISERABLE to be there. More people who enjoy skateboarding would come and give the events a shot. But they make it impossible to do what the industry is used to doing--get close, be a part of the event, feel welcome instead of like intruders, and have access to hang out with the riders in the contest without having to crawl over walls and chairs and through kids--and they give off the impression that they don't care about what the skateboarders, the team managers, the skateboarding media need or want. Not one person in their Chicago office rides a skateboard, they don't know who Tony Trujillo or Peter Ramondetta or David Gonzales is when they walk in the building, and my fear is that the gap is just too big to bridge. But... if they're willing to listen, there are enough people willing to offer opinions, and that might mean I'd have some more of these crummy Powershot videos at the next damn one. We'll see.

Mike Manzoori Videos!
Posted by Mark - 27 Jul, 2009Mike Manzoori has largely been recognized as among the favorite filmers and editors of skateboarding videos, but did you know he's also a great photographer, painter, and graphic artist? He's a modern artist and he's got a new website that's chock full of great art. My favorite section is the videos -- reminded me of why Brian Anderson's Sheep part is among my favorites -- and you should definitely check it out: http://www.mikemanzoori.com

Dew Tour Clips
Posted by Mark - 25 Jul, 2009Some random clips of when I happened to be in the arena and too bored to just sit there... point the camera, press the button. Put 'em in a timeline and hit "share" and "YouTube." Obviously, any idiot can do it!

Eric Koston at Dew Tour?
Posted by Mark - 25 Jul, 2009Eric Koston paid a visit to the Dew Tour in Boston, which is cool but a bit unusual. He went to the first one five years ago, swore "never again" and didn't go for four years... the course, the way everyone was treated, not listening to the skaters-- all reasons he wasn't into it. They've been bugging him to come, saying everything was different, would be better... He wasn't buying it after Boston. Went out, cruised his way through a comedy run, and got last. Not good for anyone. The people here just don't get it...
But watch for his new Nike commercial during the Dew Tour shows on TV, that will be good, I'm sure. You know what else is good? Check Paul Zitzer's article here. http://www.allisports.com/news/koston-tea-party-whatever-means
I can't remember the code so I've gotta write it all out. Sorry. Whatever.
Chris Ortiz was shooting photos of everyone who came in and I poached a couple shots... with my iPhone. So they're not sharp. Kill me.

Nate Sherwood Record Review: Fancy
Posted by Mark - 23 Jul, 2009Nate Sherwood is such a rad dude... very creative, a little quirky, and that's what makes him interesting to me. He reviewed the Black Them Boots record with his phone and put it up here:
You heard it from the man himself!

Welcome to NikeLand
Posted by Mark - 22 Jul, 2009Most people reading this haven't been to Huntington Beach this week to see the total takeover they've laid on the town for the US Open of Surfing. The entire beach and pier area is inundated with Nike, Converse, and Hurley branding. Everywhere. So I think its pretty funny that this little gem is going around. The Nike thing is getting interesting. Wonder if they'll get bored during the World Cup next year?
This thing is pretty funny, but part of me wonders if the old axiom "any exposure is good exposure" comes into play here. Not sure about that, but I do know that if we ignore them they won't go away! What's next?
Added Sunday night: this was twitted by Don Brown: http://mypict.me/show.php?id=ekvh

Maloof Is Over, Hip Check, Music, Travel Time!
Posted by Mark - 22 Jul, 2009Finally caught my breath after Maloof Money Cup. Been listening to music again and just started playing music again -- tonight with three quarters of Action Now. Nice. Gotta find something new though. Would love to play guitar again, but I've been listening to Motorhead a bunch lately and so of course I'm digging the bass, too. The guy who recorded the Black Them Boots record was Cameron Webb, and he also produced//recorded the latest Motorhead record, Inferno, which is super good. I'm not sure what I expected, but I didn't expect to like it and I really do...
Taking off in a couple days on the Game of SKATE tour. Gonna stop at the World Championships in Boston, which is a precursor to the dreaded Olympics/Skateboarding thing. That's another story which I'll have to find an afternoon to write about... it's a big one and it's one that a lot of people are uninformed about.
And finally, I had the first check up on my hip surgery since the surgery in early 2007, and I got some x-rays. Pretty cool that I can't do everything with that thing in me... I've got this picture in my phone now, maybe I won't get sweated into secondary at every airport x-ray checkpoint now.

Maloof Money Cup TV Shows
Posted by Mark - 17 Jul, 2009The Maloof Money Cup 2009 Main Program will air Sunday, July 19 at 11am PST / 2pm EST. That's the one-hour long compilation show that will cover the entire weekend.
Then the Maloof Money Cup "Bonus Feature" Vert Show will first air on MTV2 on July 22, at 6pm PST / 9pm EST, and the Maloof Money Cup Bonus Street Show will first air on MTV2 on July 23, at 6pm PST / 9pm EST. These are the shows that focus on the street and vert contests and go a little more in-depth into the skaters in the contest.
Check it out, or record it if you're out skating, and watch it later.
I wonder if Rip versus The Geyser will be part of the TV show? Danny Kass has a high celebrity factor and he was in their fightin' with the geyser with Rip, too, so maybe...
