Jim Greco vs. Johnny Thunders - Redux
So about 6 years ago, on April 23, 2002, I posted some photos in Randumb Notes of Johnny Thunders, including one from the 80s where he'd gone a little bonkers with the gear. That was eleven year after Thunders had died. Heres what I wrote:
Johnny Thunders died eleven years ago today. He's another one of those characters that tears me up. I love his whole deal -- the music, the pity-me look that girls love because they feel they need to rescue him, and he'll let them rescue him, the rock look that says f-it to everything. But of course he was a doper and I still have a hard time understanding how that happens to people. Actually, though, I understand that people's realities are so much different from my own that there's no way I'll understand their deals until I'm there myself... still it's foreign to me. Even as I watched friends go down that path. I hope Greco doesn't die somewhere and we'll all be saying we didn't know what to do. Anyway, I digress. I've been listening to more of the obscure Thunders stuff recently, and I also found a new band called the Murder City Devils who do this great song about Thunders... check it here.
A couple years after that, the ad proclaimed: "Jim Greco Is Off Drugs!" and since that time Jim has been steering clear of the drugs, but steering more and more towards Thunders' style. Sometimes it's a little out there, but it's always entertaining and it's awesome that we have people who have the balls to do what they feel, no matter what their inspiration... Anyway, check out these photos of Thunders from 20 years ago and Greco from earlier this year and you may find the resemblance uncanny... or not.
And just for fun, check out this awesome version of Thunders doing "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" from 1987.
